WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

FRED BISCOMBE (1865-1937)

When Mr William Biscombe junior (1857-1916), the eldest son of the late Mr William Biscombe senior (1832-1903), the founder of Messrs W Biscombe and Sons Limited, died on December 23rd 1916, the mantle of senior partner passed to the next son, Mr Fred Biscombe.  He was never given the full name of Frederick.

Young Fred joined his father straight from school and became the Company's traveller in Devon and Cornwall.

Mr Fred Biscombe married Miss Jane Coram at the Anglican Church of Saint Paul, Devonport, on February 28th 1892.

Mrv Fred Biscombe died at "Springway", Vapron Road, Mannamead, Plymouth, on January 5th 1937.  The funeral took place at the Anglican Church of Emmanuel, Compton, on Friday January 8th 1937.  The service was conducted by the Reverend R Carnegie Knox assisted by the Reverend  J S Clarke.  The organist was Doctor Harold Lake.  He was buried at Efford Cemetery.  In addition to family members and employees of the Company, Mr A J Furguson attended on behalf of Messrs J H Furguson and Sons, and Mr E H Furse represented Messrs T Denniford and Son, other mineral water manufacturers in Plymouth.

It would appear that control of the Company passed to the two remaining brothers - Mr James Biscombe (1874-1967) and Mr Alfred Joseph Biscombe (1876-1959) - jointly.
