WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

JAMES BISCOMBE (1874-1967) and ALFRED JOSEPH BISCOMBE (1876-1959)

It would appear that when Mr Fred Biscombe (1865-1937) died on January 5th 1937 control of Messrs W Biscombe and Sons Limited passed to the two remaining brothers - Mr James Biscombe (1874-1967) and Mr Alfred Joseph Biscombe (1876-1959) - jointly.

Both brothers were educated at the Corporation Grammar School during the headship of Mr J Kinton Bond.

Mr James Biscombe married Miss Lilian Marie Broad at Christ Church, Plymouth, on March 5th 1902.  Mr Alfred Joseph Biscombe married MIss Ellen Northmore at Cornwood Parish Church, Devon, on October 28th 1902.

Mrs Ellen Biscombe passed away at 10 Whitefield Road, Plymouth, on September 14th 1914.  Widower Mr Alfred Joseph Biscombe married again on October 12th 1926 at Charles' Church, Plymouth, to Miss/Mrs Lottie Elizabeth Bunker.

In 1939 Mr and Mrs James Biscombe were living at 1 Delgany Villas, Tavistock Road, Crownhill, while Mr and Mrs Alfred Joseph Biscombe were living at "Moorcroft", Tavistock Road, Crownhill.

The bombing of the Second World War wreaked havoc all around their premises in Green Street.  The Anglican Church of Charles, right opposite their factory, was totally destroyed as were most of the buildings around them. The business remained in production until until early in 1958, when the factory was demolished during the Reconstruction of Plymouth for the benefit of the new Eastern Approach Road.  It would have stood it the middle of the road outside the former Staples store.

Mr Alfred Joseph Biscombe died on April 20th 1959.  He was cremated at Efford Crematorium on April 24th 1959.  He wa survived by his widow, two sons, three daughters and eight grandchildren.

Mr James Biscombe died on August 11th 1967.  He was cremated at Efford Crematorium on August 16th 1967.
