WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

HERBERT LIONEL THORNELY (1868-1944)

Herbert Lionel Thornely was born in Hackney, London, on September 19th 1868.

He was educated at Tideswell Grammar School, Derbyshire, and then articled to Mr Edmund Kirby of Liverpool in 1886 for five years.  He commenced his own practice at Southport, Lancashire, in 1899 and moved to Plymouth in 1903, where he went into partnership with Mr Albert Victor Rooke (1870-1931) at number 11 The Crescent, Plymouth.

Mr Herbert Lionel Thornely married Miss Margaret Mary Wilson at Headington, Oxfordshire, in 1910.  They had one son, Mr Deryck James Frank Thornely, born in Plymouth on March 5th 1911.

He remained ion Plymouth until 1925 when he moved to Liverpool to join his younger brother, Mr Arnold Thornely (1871-1953), who was knighted in 1932.

Mr Herbert Lionel Thornely, of "Crossways", 102 Osmaston Road, Prenton, Birkenhead, Cheshire, died on May 26th 1944 at the Olrig Bank Nursing Home, Kendal, Westmorland.  His estate was worth £18,962 11 shillings.

His widow, Mrs Margaret Mary Thornely, who was born on November 14th 1884, died on June 27th 1951 at the Clavadel House Hotel, Pit Farm Road, Guidford, Surrey.
