WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

GEORGE SHILLIBEER (1874-1944)

Having been born in the Meavy Valley, at Head Weir Cottage, to Mr Amos Shillibeer (1849-1939) and his wife, Emma, Mr George Shillibeer could hardly have escaped from following his father and ancestors as the Water Bailiff for the Borough of Plymouth, a post he took on in 1914 when his father retired.

In 1893 he was amongst those involved in clearing the site and excavating for the foundations of the Burrator Dam.  He became officially associated with the Borough Waterworks in 1897.

In 1939 he was succeeded as Water Bailiff by his assistant, his brother, Mr William Harold Shillibeer (1882-1948). 

Mr George Shillibeer died at Hellington Cottage, Sheepstor, on December 5th 1944 and was buried at Sheepstor Parish Church on Saturday December 9th 1944.
