WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

JOHN ROGERS (1708-1773) and HANNAH ROGERS (c1718-1766)

John Rogers was baptized at Cornwood Parish Church, Devon, on August 3st 1708.  He was the son of Sir John Rogers, 2nd Baronet Rogers (1676-1743/44), of Blachford* Manor, Cornwood, Devon, and his wife, Lady Mary Rogers, formerly Miss Mary Henley.

 He matriculated from New College at the University of Oxford, on August 13th 1724, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the same College in 1726/27.

On October 28th 1742 John Rogers married Miss Hannah Trefusis, daughter of Mr Thomas Trefusis, at Saint Benet's Welsh Church, Paul's Wharf, London.  They had no children.

Mr John Rogers was Mayor of Plymouth 1728-29; Member of Parliament for Plymouth between June 1739 and January 1739/40; Mayor of Plymouth 1743-44; and Recorder of Plymouth 1744.  He succeeded his father as the 3rd Baronet Rogers of Wisdome Barton in the County of Devon on January 21st 1743/44.  Sir John held the office of High Sheriff of Devon in 1749 and again in 1755-56.  He became a Colonel in the South Devon Militia.

Sir John Rogers died at Blachford Manor*, Cornwood, Devon, on December 20th 1773 at the age of 65 years.  He was buried in the churchyard of the Ancient Parish Church of Saint Michael and All Angels, Cornwood on December 24rth 1773.  His title passed to his younger brother, Mr Frederick Rogers, who became the 4th Baronet Rogers of Wisdome Barton in the County of Devon (1716-1777).

He was survived by his widow, the Lady Hannah Rogers, who died on April 18th 1766 and was also buried at the Ancient Parish Church of Saint Michael and All Angels, Cornwood, on April 23rd 1766.  By her will dated September 8th 1764, proven May 16th 1766, she founded the Lady Rogers Church Schools in Plymouth.
