JAMES EDWARD MOON (1838-1913) and GEORGE WINTER MOON (1842-1911)
Following the unexpected deaths of
Mr Thomas
Moon (1765-1850) and his only son, Mr Edward Moon (1804-1850) in
1850, the music and musical instrument business founded by
Mr Thomas
Moon in 1809 passed into the hands of Edward's widow, Mrs Anna
Moon. At this time the family were not only selling harps,
harpsichords and pianofortes but also other musical instruments and
sheet music. They also offered music lessons and piano tuning.
Mr Edward Moon had married Miss Anna Chubb
at
Stoke Damerel Parish Church on November 25th 1834 and she had
presented him with one daughter and two sons: James Edward Moon,
born 1838; Sophia Wensley Moon, born 1841 (who lived for only 1 year
and 5 months); and George Winter Moon,
born 1842. The census taken on Sunday April 7th 1861 shows both
sons had joined their mother as "Music Sellers" at number 6
Treville
Street.
On September 9th 1865 Mr James Edward Moon
married Miss Jane Elizabeth Munford Conway at the Ancient Parish
Church of Saint Mary, Brixton, Devon. They had
two sons,
Harold Edward Percy Moon, who was born at Brixton in 1868,
and Edgar Rupert Moon, born at Plymouth in 1872.
The census taken on Sunday April 2nd 1871 records them living at
number 3 North Hill Place, Plymouth, but the same taken on Sunday
April 3rd 1881 records them at "Cloudsley", Plymouth Road, Brixton.
Mr Edward Moon's younger son, Mr George Winter Moon, married
Miss Julia Davy at Newton Abbot, Devon, in 1869 and took his bride
to live over the shop premises at numbers 6 and 7
George Street, Plymouth. It was probably at that time that Mrs Anna
Moon, Edward's widow, retired from the business and went to live at
Headland Park, Greenbank, with her 18-years-old servant, Miss
Harriet Radmore. Her retirement was short-lived, however, for she
passed away at Headland Park on December 1st 1872, at the age of 68
years. George and Julia also had two sons, Sydney Edward Moon,
born 1872, and Archie Trevor Moon, born 1878.
It would appear that in about 1900 everything changed and both the
partners retired. Mr James Edward Moon (1838-1913) was
replaced by his eldest son,
Mr Harold Edward Percy Moon (1868-1924),
who was living at 2 Meadfoot Terrace, Plymouth, in 1901.
However,
Mr Sydney Edward Moon (1872-1961), the eldest son of Mr
George Winter Moon (1842-1913), was only a "music salesman" living
in lodgings in Tavistock in the 1901 census.
Mr George Winter Moon died at Vigar's Hall, Tavistock, on April 18th
1911. His eldest son,
Sydney, now married and living at "Sunny
Bank", Mary Tavy, Devon, succeed him. Mr James Edward Moon,
died at number 4 Woodside, Plymouth, a nursing home, on July 8th
1913.
