TRAMWAY SERVICES IN OLD PLYMOUTH  |  PLYMOUTH CORPORATION

TRAMWAY SERVICE "4" - BEAUMONT ROAD to PLYMOUTH STATION (MILLBAY)

Commencement (see note A below)

Started on April 2nd 1902; extended from Theatre Royal to Plymouth Station (Millbay) on and as from July 1st 1922. 

Original Route (see note B below)

Beaumont Road/Heathfield Road, Saint Jude's Church (fare from Beaumont Road terminus 1d), Beaumont Road, Ham Street, Ebrington Street, Drake Circus, Old Town Street, Basket Street, Westwell Street, Princess Square, Lockyer Street, Theatre Royal (1½), George Street, Millbay Road, Plymouth Station (Millbay) (1½d).

Extended to West Hoe and Promenade Pier as required.

Subsequent development (see note C below)

The tramway between Theatre Royal and West Hoe was closed on February 16th 1931 and this service was cut back to the Theatre Royal from that date.

Route Licensing Regulations, Wednesday July 8th 1931

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, tramway service "4", Theatre Royal, Ebrington Street to Beaumont Road, was allocated number H.1316.

Replacement by Motor Buses, October 19th 1931

The last tram on this service ran on October 18th 1931.  When motor buses replaced the trams on and as from October 19th 1931, the route became Motor Bus Service "4".

Note A:  Wherever possible an exact date of commencement of a service is shown.  However, in a lot of cases no precise date has been recorded so reference will be made to official returns to the Council or other documentary evidence to narrow the date down as much as possible.
