Subsequent development (see note C below)

It would appear that at sometime between 1931 and 1937 the "2" became the "2A" (anticlockwise) and the "2A" became the "2B" (clockwise).

Route Licensing Regulations, Wednesday July 8th 1931

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, tramway service "2" was allocated number H.1312.  The reverse service "2A" was allocated license number H.1313.

Provision was made for the Football Specials from Fore Street and Paradise Road to Home Park by the allocation of Route number "2B" and license number H.1353.  Two other services were allocated route numbers "2C" and "2D", running Theatre Royal to Hyde Park, Peverell Park Road, Fore Street, Edgcumbe Street and Theatre Royal, and the reverse.  They were allocated license numbers H.1351 and H.1352 respectively.  What purpose they served is not known.

Renumbering Scheme, Monday April 5th 1937

When the whole network was renumbered on Monday April 5th 1937, the "2A" became the Route "1" (anticlockwise) and the "2B" became the Route "2" (clockwise).

Replacement by Motor Buses, Monday May 10th 1937

Tram routes 1 (anticlockwise) and 2 (clockwise) ceased on Sunday May 9th 1937 and were replaced by buses on Monday May 10th 1937.

Note A:  Wherever possible an exact date of commencement of a service is shown.  However, in a lot of cases no precise date has been recorded so reference will be made to official returns to the Council or other documentary evidence to narrow the date down as much as possible.

Note B:  This gives the roads and streets the service passed through.  A road or street name in brackets indicates that it has not been confirmed beyond doubt that the road or street was used by buses on this route but it is a "best guess" based on the author's knowledge of the practice at the time.  If it is subsequently confirmed by either documentary or photographic evidence that the road or street was traversed by this service then the brackets will be deleted.

Note C:  Where deviations to the original route are shown they will be from and to a road or street named in the "Original Route" section so that the alteration in route can be easily followed.
