RAILWAYS IN OLD PLYMOUTH  |  MAIN LINE, BRENT STATION TO PLYMOUTH STATION (MILLBAY)

MUTLEY TUNNEL

Mutley Tunnel, on the South Devon Railway/Great Western Railway between Lipson Junction Signal Box and North Road Plymouth Station, under Mutley Plain, was 183 yards long.  The present car park over the tracks at the western end of it do not constitute part of the Tunnel.

The 245½ mile post was inside the Tunnel.

The high level of the two roadways on either side of the western entrance to the Tunnel were a popular spot for photographers, some samples of their pictures being included below.

A Down Southern Region freight train travels in the Up direction over the Western Region main line
to get from Devonport Junction to Lipson Junction, where it will branch off to Friary Goods Depot.
