SURNAMES - XYZ

John Yeo (1841-1918) was born at Bradford, north Devon, in 1841.  After education at Tuke's School in Chulmleigh and at the Bible Christian College at Shebbear, both in Devon, he was apprenticed in the drapery trade.  In 1873 he married Miss Julia Longley ,from Canterbury, Kent.  Soon afterwards he became a junior partner to Alderman Joseph Pillman, draper, and when Alderman Pillman retired in 1878 the business became simply John Yeo's.    John Yeo was Mayor of Plymouth for 1905-1906 and 1909-1910.  Mr John Yeo died at his home, "Standerton", Seymour Avenue, Plymouth, on Tuesday May 7th 1918.  In 1928 the business was given limited liability status as Messrs John Yeo and Company Limited.
