WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

NICHOLAS LOCKYER (1781-1847)

Nicholas Lockyer was born to Mr Thomas Lockyer (1756-1806) and his wife Ann (formerly Grose) on May 21st 1781 and baptised at the Ancient Parish Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle on July 25th 1781. 

He joined the Royal Navy and was a Lieutenant in 1803, a Commander in 1806 and a Captain in 1815.

A short announcement in the "Exeter Flying Post" on Thursday September 25th 1823 stated that: 'Wednesday last, Captain Nicholas Lockyer, CB, RN, was elected Mayor of Plymouth for the year ensuing.' 

Captain Nicholas Lockyer, Royal Navy, was Mayor of Plymouth for 1823-1824 and again in 1830-1831.

He died of bronchitis at Malta on the evening of January 23rd 1847 while Captain of HMS "Albion".  He was 65 years of age.  He was buried in Malta on March 3rd 1847.

The "Illustrated London News" of November 13th 1847 recorded that a tablet had been erected at Saint Andrew's Church by the officers of HMS "Albion" in memory of their late captain.
