HENRY GEORGE HURRELL (1901-1981)
Henry George Hurrell was born on July 3rd 1901, the only son of Mr & Mrs Henry Hurrell, corn merchant, of Peverell Park Villa, Tavistock Road, Devonport.
After attending Plymouth College, Henry went on to Christ Church, Cambridge, where he read sciences, after which he joined the family business, Messrs Hurrell and Company Limited.
On June 22nd 1927 Mr Henry George Hurrell married Miss Lillian Jones, youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs Leonard Jones, of Mannamead, Plymouth.
He continued to run the family business of Messrs Hurrell and Company until around 1937/38, when he sold out to Spillers Milling Group and then devoted his life to a silver fox farm near Moorgate, Wrangaton, which his father had sold years before. He then became more familiarly known as 'HG' and became well known as a painter of nature, birdwatcher and a maker of natural history films.
Mrs Lillian Hurrell died in 1980 at the age of 85 years.
Mr Henry George Hurrell died at his home, Moorgate, Wrangaton, on Saturday May 23rd 1981. He was 79 years of age.
The funeral was at Mutley Baptist Chapel on Friday May 29th 1981.
He was survived by two sons, Leonard and Kenneth, and a daughter, Elaine.
