WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

PERCY FLETCHER (1899-1969)

Percy Fletcher was born on November 25th 1899 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Mr George Fletcher and his wife.

At the time of the census on April 2nd 1911, Mr George Fletcher was a furniture dealer living at 19 Cambridge Street, Plymouth.

In 1926 Mr Percy Fletcher married Miss Jessica Clarissa Proctor in Plymouth.  She was slightly older than him, having been born on October 9th 1898.  He was then continuing his father's business as a furniture dealer at number 9 Russell Street.

When the special census was taken on September 29th 1939 Percy was a garage proprietor and he and Jessica were living at number 35 Mutley Road.  He was in fact in partnership with a Mr Shobrook trading as Car Sales, motor car agents, in Raleigh Street; telephone Plymouth 60412.  They had workshops in nearby Morley Lane.

It is not yet known exactly when Messrs Car Sales (Plymouth) Limited was registered but the Company was certainly advertising in October 1948.  The business address was numbers 2 to 10 Summerland Place.

By 1950 the Fletchers were living at Meavy Lodge, in the parish of Buckland Monachorum.

On October 1st 1955 Messrs Car Sales (Plymouth) Limited was merged with Messrs A C Turner Limited and Messrs Michael Arthur Turner (1925-2001) and Percy Fletcher became joint managing directors with both their wives as fellow directors and a Mr F J W Hodgson as company secretary.

Mr Percy Fletcher was cremated at Efford Crematorium on December 27th 1969.

Mrs Jessica Clarissa Fletcher was cremated at Efford Crematorium on April 21st 1987.
