WHO WAS WHO IN OLD PLYMOUTH

CHARLES ERNEST BRENDON (1876-1936)

Following the death of his elder brother, Mr George Frederick William Brendon (1869-1923) on July 8th 1923 and their father, Mr William Turner Brendon, on July 5th 1928, the printing business of Messrs William Brendon and Son Limited passed to the fourth son, Mr Charles Ernest Brendon.

Charles's wife, Mrs Heather Beatrice Brendon, gave birth to William Turner Brendon junior in 1908 at their home, "Dunheved House", Saltash, Cornwall.  He was followed on March 28th 1911 by twin boys, Robert Edwards Harvey Brendon and Charles Richard McLaren Brendon.

In addition to his duties managing the business of Messrs William Brendon and Son Limited, Charles was a director of the Plymouth Argyle Football Club and a Conservative Party Councillor for the Saint Andrew's Ward.  Hie was keen on farming and country sports, especially the Dartmoor Hounds, a member of the Royal Western Yacht Club, and took a keen interest in the Boy Scouts' movement.

Mr Charles Ernest Brendon died at his home, "Rutt", Ivybridge, Devon, on Sunday August 9th 1936 at the age of 60 years.  He was survived by his widow and five sons.  His funeral took place at Saint John's Church, Ivybridge, on Wednesday August 12th 1936, followed by cremation at Efford Crematorium, Plymouth.

The list of representatives of the Company who attended the funeral is of interest in itself.  It included: Mr Fisher, a director, and Mr Frank H Telfer, managing director; Messrs F Gane; J P Morley; C R Payne; J D Rouse; R J Stanton; and E Wallace; Misses E B Bassett; R Bone; C Dyer; J Harris; P Hockaday; S Howe; E Jago; I Kirkpatrick; E Manning; H Taylor; W Winter and M Willis.  The Composing Department was represented by Messrs Bal; T Barrow; F Caseley; J Colwill; W Hockaday; W Neil; E Pope; Scroggs; E Smith; H Walsh; J Worden and Miss W Kerswell.  The representatives from the Machining Department were Messrs O Burd; A Coyle; R Edwards; J Fewings; H Full; F Gloyn; W E Coffin; W Helier; C Henwood; G Sinnott; J Sugrue; J Williams; Mrs Harvey; and the Misses Fletcher; D Hicks; W Owen; E Pearce and L Reader.  Those representing the Binding and Warehouse Departments were Messrs A and C Andrews; E Abbott; A Austin; J Elliott; L Hunkin; L and W H Hills; T Love; J Morley; P Stanbury; and the Misses M Austin; M Coon; F Gerry; J Helson; I May; M Green; J Nile; M Riddell; E and G Saunders; H Sleeman; and M Tutton.

Messrs F Underhill, R Bowering and R C Palmer represented the Plymouth and District Master Printers' Association.

Mr Charles Richard McLaren Brendon died at Saint Thomas's Hospital, London, on March 5th 1940 following an operation.  In 1939 he was an apartment proprietor living at 5 to 7 York Street, Baker Street, in the City of Westminster.

Mr William Turner Brendon died on April 6th 1988 and was cremated at Efford Crematorium on April 8th 1988.

The business passed in to the control of Mr Robert Edwards Harvey Brendon (1911-1991).
