TRAMWAY SERVICE "6" - THEATRE ROYAL to PENNYCOMEQUICK, FORE STREET and THEATRE ROYAL

Commencement (see note A below)

Monday October 23rd 1916, when through running was introduced following the amalgamation of the Three Towns on November 9th 1914.

Original Route (see note B below)

Route 6 - Theatre Royal, Lockyer Street, Princess Square, Westwell Street, Basket Street, Old Town Street, Pound Street, Cobourg Street, Pennycomequick (fare from the Theatre Royal, 1d), Stuart Road, Wilton Street (1½d), Paradise Road, Fore Street (2d), Chapel Street, Cumberland Road, Devonport Hill, Stonehouse Bridge, Edgcumbe Street, Union Street, Bank of England Place, Theatre Royal (3d).

Subsequent development (see note C below)

---

Unification of the Network, Saturday July 1st 1922

The service remained as Route 6 (anticlockwise), Theatre Royal, Cobourg Street, Pennycomequick, Wilton Street, Fore Street, Chapel Street, Edgcumbe Street, Union Street, Theatre Royal, with Route 6A (clockwise), Theatre Royal, Union Street, Edgcumbe Street, Saint Aubyn Street, Fore Street, Wilton Street, Pennycomequick, Cobourg Street, Theatre Royal.

Route Licensing Regulations, Wednesday July 8th 1931

Under the new route licensing regulations that came into force on Wednesday July 8th 1931, tramway service "6", at that time quoted as being Theatre Royal, Fore Street, Wilton Street, Theatre Royal (clockwise), was allotted license number H.1318; while the "6A", then Theatre Royal, Wilton, Street, Fore Street, Theatre Royal (anticlockwise), was allocated H.1319.  [This is rather odd because in all Council references the Route "6" is shown as anticlockwise and the "6A" as clockwise.]

Replacement by Motor Buses, Monday April 5th 1937

Because the tram tracks at Pennycomequick Hill (between North Road and Pennycomequick) needed replacing, the Council decided to replace all tram services using the Hill with motor buses.  The number "6" tram service was replaced by the number "6" motor bus service on and as from Monday April 5th 1937.

Note A:  Wherever possible an exact date of commencement of a service is shown.  However, in a lot of cases no precise date has been recorded so reference will be made to official returns to the Council or other documentary evidence to narrow the date down as much as possible.

Note B:  This gives the roads and streets the service passed through.  A road or street name in brackets indicates that it has not been confirmed beyond doubt that the road or street was used by buses on this route but it is a "best guess" based on the author's knowledge of the practice at the time.  If it is subsequently confirmed by either documentary or photographic evidence that the road or street was traversed by this service then the brackets will be deleted.

Note C:  Where deviations to the original route are shown they will be from and to a road or street named in the "Original Route" section so that the alteration in route can be easily followed.
