ROSEVILLE EMPIRE CINEMA

Just before Christmas 1922 the licence for the 300-seater Argyle Cinema on Mutley Plain was transferred to Mr Samuel W Hodgess.  The cinema was referred to as the Roseville Empire.

It was recorded in April 1923 that the licensee had been fined ten shillings for an unstipulated offence under the Cinematograph Act and curiously no further licences were issued. It has to be assumed, therefore, that the licence was revoked and that the Roseville Empire closed sometime between April and June of that year.
