The People's Palace, next door to the Salvation Army Barracks in Martin Street, Plymouth, was opened on Monday October 21st 1889 by Messrs L C J and H W F Livermore, of London. They had taken the lease of the former Olympia building and had it reconstructed and redecorated.
For the first programme the admission prices were: gallery, 6d; pit and side elevations, 9d; and stalls 1s 6d.
Lectures and "limelight" shows were also held and proved very popular, 900 persons being recorded for a "limelight" show about the Rhine.
